LOCAL AND REGIONAL SPORTS From Dakota Radio Group Sports RAPID CITY, S.D. – Senior Polly Gill of the ESD Champion and Class AA runner up Pierre Lady Governors was named to the first team Class AA All State Volleyball team named today by the South Dakota Volleyball Coaches Association. Gill, a 5-7 senior middle hitter, tallied 297 kills, 35 aces, 32 blocks and 230 digs for the Lady Govs, who rang up 25 straight wins, dating from the consolation title in last year’s state tournament, before bowing in a five-set thriller to Rapid City Stevens in the “AA” final. Gill was a second team All State selection last year and becomes the very first Pierre player to be named to the First team All State team.. Two other Lady Governors, senior Gina Geffre and sophomore Steph Paluch were named to the second team All State squad. It’s the first time that Pierre has had 3 players named to the All State teams. RAPID CITY, S.D. – Senior Amy Sykora of State AA champion Rapid City Stevens leads the Class AA All State Volleyball team named today by the South Dakota Volleyball Coaches Association. Sykora, who led her team from a 0-2 deficit in the championship of the State AA tournament to a come from behind 3-2 win over Pierre in the title game led the Raiders with 964 set assists. Joining Sykora on the AA all-state first team are Caitlin Templeton of Rapid City Central, Ellyce Youngren of Brookings, Trisha Birr of Huron, Polly Gill of Pierre, Emily Palmer of Sioux Falls Lincoln, Taylor Zwart of Sioux Falls Washington, and Hannah Youngberg of Yankton. Second-team honorees are senior Amanda Lipp of Aberdeen Central, senior Gina Geffre and junior Steph Paluch of Pierre, senior Alyssa Chambers and junior Heather Goehring of Roosevelt and senior Kayla Huether of Stevens. No honorable mentions are made in Class AA.
